School visit with The Maurice Sendak Community School

-+*I also recently had a lovely visit with first and second graders at P.S. 118, The Maurice Sendak Community School where we talked about circus chefs, infinity, and bouffants. My favorite question: “Why did you write a book about Infinity instead of one hundred?” I’m working on that one! (the prequel?)

Skype visit with the International School of Lausanne

-+*I just had a Skype visit with the International School of Lausanne, where the students are from 53 different countries. My favorite part was doing call and response poems with them and hearing all their beautiful accents.Thank you to my friend Sandra Nickel for arranging everything! The fifth graders at the International School of Lausanne […]

Two Truths and a Lie: An interview with Gabi Swiatkowska

-+*I interviewed Gabi Swiatkowska for a Dweck Center presentation at the Brooklyn Public Library. Two hundred enthusiastic fourth and fifth graders from PS 8 attended. Afterwards, Gabi signed Mary Cassatt: Extraordinary Impressionist Painter, written by Barbara Herkert and illustrated by Gabi. The book is really beautiful!

The Brooklyn Botanical Gardens Ghouls and Gourds Festival

-+*Reading Big Bouffant at The Brooklyn Botanical Gardens Ghouls and Gourds Festival. What an amazing event…giant puppets, great bands, an author’s book barn, and that was just the beginning!

Explore Charter School’s ABC Day

-+*I just presented at this school for their author’s day. The kids are really amazing, and are so interested in books. When I asked whether they knew a word for the infinity symbol that begins with ‘l’, one boy said ‘lopsided eight’-awesome! I like it even more than lemniscate.

Beyond the Bouffant, at the Jean Paul Gaultier show

-+*This amazing show, complete with mannequins that talk and sing, closed yesterday at the Brooklyn Museum. I love that he was inspired by his grandmother to be creative.

The Society of Illustrator’s Original Art Show

-+*The Society of Illustrator’s Original Art Show; here I am next to the infinite number spread from Infinity and Me.

Brooklyn Public Library Presentation to Third Graders

-+*I was kind of scared to try this, but I asked one hundred and eighty third graders to invent their own infinity symbols out of pipe cleaners. They did a great job! Here are a few of them sharing their inventions on stage. The students were from PS 9, PS 3, and St. Marks, and […]

St. Nicks Alliance Family Literacy Graduation

-+*I was invited to be the visiting author at this graduation. After a reading, family members each came up with definitions of infinity. The Brooke Jackman Foundation provided each graduate with a backpack of school supplies and a copy of Infinity and Me. This event was the highlight of my week!
